Petting is the good old fashion way of touching your partner without having sex.

Petting is sexual play that does not lead to penetrative sex. Most petting begins with kissing and can develop into a much more passionate encounter as the couple become more aroused. Kissing and cuddling can lead to stimulation of the breasts and genitals and mutual masturbation. When petting is followed by penetrative sex it is called foreplay. 

Petting is an opportunity for people to communicate sexually, telling each other what they don't like and what makes them feel good. Kissing, cuddling and caressing without necessarily having penetrative sex is an important part of developing intimacy in a relationship. Petting is also a way to establish the physical side of a new relationship while at the same time getting to know your partner.
